A Professorship in Ibero-Romance and General Linguistics is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel beginning on February 1, 2026, or by appointment with the successful applicant. The professorship is advertised open rank as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), an Associate Professor or a Full Professor and is appointed depending on the qualifications.

Your position
We are looking for a scholar able to represent this field in teaching and research, presenting a broad profile and theoretical-methodological diversity. Applications with significant strengths in the field of digitalization and/or a focus on sociolinguistics, language contact, migration linguistics or global Spanish will be given preference.
The professorship will be located in the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies. It will be committed to teaching in the BA and MA levels of Hispanic Studies, to establish connections to the fields of General Linguistics, to be actively involved in the interdisciplinary Master's program in Language and Communication, in the doctoral program at the Herrmann Paul School of Linguistics, and in the new development of a linguistics BA program. In addition to the ability to teach in the target language at the highest level, the willingness to teach courses in other languages (English, German) and to participate and contribute to the local academic life in an appropriate manner is also an important criterion for a successful application.
Your profile
Applicants must have an excellent PhD, substantial post-doctoral research experience and an excellent research and publication record commensurate with their academic age. Experience in teaching at various levels and familiarity with digital tools for teaching and research is expected. Commitment in the supervision of doctoral students and in the acquisition of third-party funds are required, as well as the ability to work in a team and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.
Language skills in Spanish at the highest level, excellent language skills in English and the willingness to acquire German language skills within two years are required.
