Professor for Slavic and General Literary Studies (open rank)

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Basel is seeking to fill a Professorship for Slavic and General Literary Studies with a focus on cultural studies (open rank) at 100%, starting February 1, 2026 or by arrangement. The advertisement is open rank and will be filled at the level of Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), Associate Professor or Full Professor according to the qualifications of the person appointed.

Your position

We are looking for a versatile person with an excellent track record in Slavic literary studies with a focus on cultural studies.

  • The professor to be appointed heads the Subject Area of Slavic Studies, promotes its future-oriented cultural studies approach (including in the fields of film studies and visual media of Eastern Europe) and has a research focus on intercultural, transnational, social and contemporary issues.
  • The professorship is responsible for undergraduate teaching in the fields of Slavic Studies (MA and PhD) and Eastern European Cultures (BA) broadly conceived and contributes to interdepartmental study programmes (e.g. BA degree Eastern European Studies).
  • The professor cooperates closely in research and teaching with other subject areas within the interphilological comparative structure of the Department. Among other things, the future colleague is expected to contribute to the field of general literary studies, the interdisciplinary master's degree programme in literary studies and the PhD programme in literary studies.
  • The professor cooperates closely with other Departments within the Faculty in research and teaching. Together with the Professor of Eastern European History, they are responsible for the interdepartmental profile area Eastern Europe.

Your profile

  • Applicants have an excellent PhD and substantial post-doctoral research experience.
  • They have an excellent research and publication record commensurate with their academic age.
  • Experience in teaching and familiarity with digital tools for teaching and research is also expected.
  • Applicants have excellent language skills in at least two Slavic languages.
  • Applicants are willing to regularly teach courses in German and/or English.
  • Applicants commit to the supervision of PhD students and the acquisition of third-party funding, as well as the ability to work in a team and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.
